Monitoring is fine, but automation is quicker

Take the proverb “a bird in hand is worth two in the bush,” combine it with the more modern “wine is fine, but whiskey’s quicker,” (from the sage Ozzy Osbourne), and then throw in a splash of network management. What do you get? Network monitoring is great, but automation gets it done.

Automation is one of the key differentiators of Uplogix from other console server solutions. First, we use the out-of-band position of a console server in the network stack to continuously monitor devices like a maniacal network admin plugged in with their laptop 24×7.

With a default increment of 30 seconds, we’re asking each device everything they know about their health and operations — not over the network using SNMP and slowing everything down, but over the console port. Then Uplogix can report issues over a variety of channels: directly into centralized monitoring tools like SolarWinds, by creating an event in a ticketing system, via a text message… however you want. Everyone agrees, monitoring is great.

But we’re here to talk about automation. Monitoring/alerting is where other solutions wipe off their hands and pat themselves on the back for a job well done. The humans will take over now… For Uplogix, the job is only half done. From that console server position, we can also take actions like an admin with a crash cart making informed decisions based on the monitoring data collected and analyzed locally.

What does your run book say to do? Clear an interface? Cycle the power? Recover from ROMmon state? Check, check, check. Uplogix can do that. In fact, most issues with network devices aren’t that difficult to recover from, you just need to triangulate the issues, the right access and know what to do. When you can automate these responses, skilled network admins can focus on the tough challenges and innovation, not routine troubleshooting and recovery.

Some of the automated support capabilities of Uplogix include:

  • Automate standard support routines | Uplogix provides numerous recovery procedures that allow you to automatically address common faults without human intervention such as automatically rebooting a hung, or wedged, device to multiple types of configuration recovery.  A robust automation framework is provided for end-users to modify prepackaged or define sequential and conditional recovery procedures that align with their support practices (e.g.   Clear Service Module -> Cycle Interface -> Show Tech -> Reboot -> Cycle Power).
  • Recover from failed configuration changes via the powerful SurgicalRollback™ feature | This added “safety net” enables IT staff to make real-time to changes to network elements without the risk of failed configurations impacting operational performance.
  • Reboot hung equipment | Uplogix’ automated diagnosis framework can automatically detect a hung, or wedged, device and instantly cycle power to the unit. The Uplogix Local Manager can often detect and resolve this common problem before traditional management tools even know it exists.
  • Troubleshoot WAN connection issues | Uplogix can automatically detect common WAN problems, including outages or flapping circuits, and provide an instant diagnosis with the supporting trending or configuration data to speed recovery, document outages, or facilitate carrier resolution.

What are your routine network management issues? Odds are, with the functionality, security and reliability of Uplogix, we can help you find more time for other activities, say bird watching and/or “staying hydrated…”
