Data Center Incident Reveals Riskier Side of Consolidation and the Need for Faster Problem Resolution

Consolidation brings many benefits, but like the push to move applications to the cloud, makes local network infrastructure even more critical

AUSTIN, Texas (August 16, 2013) – A recent failure of two network switches in a Utah data center and the resulting downtime for four major US web hosting firms impacted millions of customers. Uplogix, the global leader in local network device and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) management, sees events like these as proof points for the importance of high-resolution network device monitoring and automated responses for issues.

Infrastructure issues have cause trouble for major cloud providers, like Amazon, that experienced downtime due to problems with power. The centralization core to the success of the cloud means that access to the cloud is as important as what is in the cloud itself. As businesses move critical functions to the cloud, they rely more and more on their network infrastructures to connect to those functions. To a large degree, reliability in the cloud will be there. The more likely risk will be issues with the local network.

It’s more than if the network is up or down. Cloud applications require the network to operate at specified service levels or the savings and promise of the cloud will be drowned out by user complaints of slow moving applications—killing productivity and costing business.

Uplogix provides solutions for the increasingly-important network infrastructure component often overlooked in the cloud discussion. A Local Manager can automatically detect common WAN problems, including outages or flapping circuits, and provide an instant diagnosis with the supporting trending or configuration data to speed recovery, document outages, or facilitate carrier resolution.

Many common faults can be solved by Uplogix without human intervention at all. A robust automation framework makes it possible for end-users to modify prepackaged—or define sequential and conditional—recovery procedures that align with their run book. For example, problems with a device could have the following automated steps taken with an evaluation for a successful recovery in between each action: Clear Service Module… Cycle Interface… Show Tech… Reboot… Cycle Power.

In more complex situations where automated recovery processes can ‘ t fix a problem, it is escalated to human experts. Uplogix provides a secure out-of-band connection to the device ‘ s console port for remote troubleshooting. The connection is like what an onsite technician would do to remediate an issue.
