Cisco: 75% of IoT initiatives not successful

New Cisco study shows the challenges of IoT initiatives

In a study out from Cisco this week, one of the key vendors in IoT, says that only 26 percent of companies in their survey feel that they have been successful with their IoT initiatives. The danger zone for most IoT initiatives is the proof of concept (POC) stage, where 60 percent stall.

The complexity of moving from the POC to the real world is the biggest challenge. Cisco says that partnerships are the key to making it pass the POC. In every stage from strategic planning, design and architecture, implementation and deployment, ongoing management and maintenance, technical consulting and support and data analytics, the study showed that the most successful organizations are engaging the IoT partner ecosystem.

The study isn’t implying that the challenges are leading to a slowdown or backlash against IoT initiatives, concluding that today 73 percent of organizations are using data from IoT projects to improve their businesses. Impacts areas include improved product quality/performance, improved decision making, lowered operational costs, improved or new customer interactions and reduced maintenance or downtime.

On a positive note, the survey says that “Even in failure, opportunities arise.” 64 percent of respondents agree that learning form stalled or failed initiatives help accelerate their IoT investments. This doesn’t sound great when you consider that likely means that 36 percent feel burned by the process or perhaps were canned for the failure.

Improve your IoT initiatives with Uplogix

The exponential expansion of end nodes from the Internet of Things (IoT) will break the underlying infrastructure (technically or from a financial perspective) without similarly exponential improvement in managing network infrastructure. Uplogix Local Management helps enable the IoT revolution in two key areas:

  • Secure administration of remote devices | Ensuring appropriate and audited access/compliance with policies at all times through secure out-of-band administrative access
  • Scaling management of network infrastructure | Combining high resolution monitoring with run book responses ensures the bulk of device issues are handed rapidly and automatically. As an onsite “toolbox” Uplogix saves truck rolls and allows administrators to implement mass config changes efficiently.
